Fire investigators have released a cause for the Sunday night fire at the Gerhardt USA facility fire in Dallastown.

The investigation team, which included a state police fire marshal, a detective from York Area Regional Police, a K-9 investigator from the Dauphin County District Attorney's Office and an agent from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, ruled the fire accidental.

The fire originated in the chem polishing area of the business from a heat source that ignited nearby combustible materials, investigators said.

The fire spread outward into the facility located at 400 E. Locust St. and upward through the roof, taking about two hours to extinguish, said Darryl Ehrhart, deputy fire chief for Dallastown's Rescue Fire Co.

About 150 firefighters from the Rescue Fire Co. and other departments responded to the fire around 10:38 Sunday evening.

York and Lancaster county HazMat teams were dispatched to the scene.

The building sustained heavy smoke and fire damage, investigators said, with a total loss estimated to exceed $2 million.

No one was injured in the fire.
