Route 30 commuters will soon have a new place to fuel up -- on coffee.

A Dunkin' Donuts is slated for a 6,000-square-foot strip mall being built at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue, the former site of a BP gasoline station.

The doughnut shop and a Supercuts hair salon are expected to take up all but 2,000 square feet of the retail strip, said Chad Stine, an agent with Coldwell Banker Commercial Bennett Williams, who is looking for tenants for the remaining spaces up for lease.

Stine said the owner of the plot -- New Cumberland-based HET Enterprises LLC -- wanted to redevelop the land to make better use of its high-profile location along the busy Route 30 shopping and commuter hub.

"Obviously, it's a signalized intersection along Route 30," Stine said. "It's very high traffic, very good demographics."

Organizers for the retail center, which is expected to open in October, said traffic onto the property will decrease as a result of the new use. There are also expected to be more employees; the gas station employed only three people.

The old gas station was demolished earlier this year, and Ames Construction Inc. of Ephrata is constructing the new building.

The York City Council approved the work last fall.
