A Northern High School student took first place and won a $5,000 scholarship in the 12th annual Pennsylvania Youth Driving Championships, held Friday.
First-place in the competition went to Michelle L. Gettie, a student in the Northern School District in York County. Edward W. Benish, of Carlisle High School, placed second and received a $3,000 scholarship.
About 20 high school students participated in the competition after earning the right to advance by scoring well in local competitions.
The state competition included a written test, a slide perception test, and each student completed a driving course. Students were also asked to perform a vehicle inspection and find defects.
