LORETTO, Pa.—The former treasurer of the prison guards' union at Loretto Federal Correctional Institution is accused of embezzling more than $40,000 from the union.

Forty-three-year-old Richard Vincent, of Altoona, is charged with two counts of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds. He has waived the charges to Cambria County Court.

Authorities say Vincent wrote 62 checks made out to cash or to merchants and vendors for his own purposes since 2005.

Vincent and his attorney couldn't be reached Tuesday. Vincent remains free on his own recognizance. A prison spokeswoman declined comment.

The U.S. Department of Labor and the Cambria County district attorney's office investigated.
