CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa.—State prison officials plan to add a $17.8 million-dollar medium security unit to a women's prison in Crawford County.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections wants to add the 230-bed unit to the State Correctional Institution-Cambridge Springs by the year 2010.
The minimum security prison opened in 1992. It was formerly the Polish National Alliance College before being purchased by the state and renovated for use as a prison.
Currently, the prison is used to house women who are nearing the end of their prison sentences.
SCI-Muncy in Lycoming County is the other women's prison in the state.
